Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the right to challenge certain rulings made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
