Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication when the closure began. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
